Psychology & therapy

Evidence-based talking therapy (CBT, EMDR, schema and more), carefully matched to you and to what brought you here.

Psychology and therapy at The Mind Faculty means one-to-one talking therapy with a clinical psychologist, counselling psychologist or counsellor, using evidence-based approaches such as CBT, ACT, EMDR and schema therapy, plus formal psychological assessment where it's needed. Sessions are available in person in Mont Kiara, Kuala Lumpur, or by secure video, in English, Bahasa Malaysia, Mandarin, Cantonese and Tamil.

Therapy works best when the approach and the person fit you. Our psychologists and counsellors are trained across several models, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), EMDR for trauma, schema therapy for long-standing patterns, and mindfulness-based approaches, and choose what suits the problem rather than applying one method to everyone.

Our clinical psychologists also carry out psychological assessments, including for ADHD, autism, learning difficulties and neuropsychological questions such as the effects of brain injury. Where medication may help, or where a diagnosis needs a medical view, we connect you with a psychiatrist within the faculty rather than sending you elsewhere.

What to expect

How psychology & therapy works here

  1. Getting matched

Tell us what's going on, in as few or as many words as you like. We'll suggest a therapist whose approach, experience and language fit, or you can ask for someone specific.

  2. The first session

Mostly listening. Your therapist asks what's brought you in, what you've tried, and what you'd like to be different. There's no pressure to have the right words. By the end you'll usually have a shared sense of what the work could look like.

  3. The work itself

Weekly or fortnightly sessions of around 50 minutes. Depending on the approach there may be things to try between sessions. Progress is reviewed together, and the plan adjusts as you go.

  4. Ending well

Therapy has a natural end. Some people need a handful of focused sessions, others longer. You'll decide the pace together, and you can return later if you need to.

Questions people ask

Psychology & therapy, answered

How do I choose between a clinical psychologist, a counselling psychologist and a counsellor?

All three provide talking therapy. Clinical psychologists have additional training in assessment and in more complex or severe conditions. Counselling psychologists and counsellors focus on therapy itself, often around relationships, life transitions and stress. We'll help you choose, and the fit with the person matters as much as the title.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on what you're working on. A focused course of CBT for anxiety or low mood is often 8 to 16 sessions. Deeper work on trauma or long-standing patterns takes longer. Your therapist will give you a realistic sense after the first session.

Is online therapy as effective as in person?

For most talking therapies, yes, the evidence is good. Many of our practitioners offer secure video sessions. Some assessments are best done in person, and we'll tell you if that applies.

Is therapy confidential?

Yes. What you share stays between you and your therapist, within the professional limits around serious risk to your safety or someone else's, which your therapist will explain at the start.

Do you offer psychological assessments?

Yes. Our clinical psychologists carry out assessments for ADHD, autism, learning difficulties and neuropsychological questions, for children and adults. Assessments typically take more than one session and produce a written report.
