Children & teens

Play, assessment and steady support for young people, and the grown-ups around them. We help them feel understood first.

Child and adolescent mental health care at The Mind Faculty covers assessment, therapy and psychiatric support for young people from early childhood through the teenage years, and guidance for the adults around them. Our child and adolescent psychiatrists, child psychologists, art psychotherapist, special-education consultant and ADHD coach work together in Mont Kiara, Kuala Lumpur, on ADHD, autism, anxiety, low mood, learning difficulties, school stress and more.

Young people rarely arrive with a tidy label. They arrive with a parent who's worried, a school that's noticed something, or a teenager who's gone quiet. We start by helping the young person feel understood, and by giving parents a clear, honest picture of what's going on, without alarm and without dismissal.

Our faculty includes psychiatrists who specialise in child and adolescent mental health and neurodevelopmental conditions, clinical psychologists who carry out assessments for ADHD, autism and learning difficulties, an art psychotherapist for younger children and those who find talking hard, a special-education consultant, and an ADHD and executive-function coach. Support for parents runs alongside, because how home responds shapes how a child recovers.

What to expect

How children & teens works here

  1. Talking to the parents first

We usually begin with a conversation with parents or carers, in person or by video, to understand your concerns, the history and what you're hoping for. This helps us decide who your child should see and how to introduce it to them.

  2. Meeting your child

The first session with a young person is about trust, not testing. Depending on age it may involve play, drawing or simply talking. Teenagers are given appropriate privacy and told clearly what is and isn't shared with parents.

  3. Assessment, if needed

For ADHD, autism or learning difficulties, assessment may take several sessions and can include questionnaires for parents and school. You receive a written report and a clear explanation of what it means.

  4. Support that fits

Therapy, medication where appropriate, coaching, school liaison and parenting strategies, in whatever combination fits your child. Progress is reviewed with you regularly.

Questions people ask

Children & teens, answered

At what age can a child see a psychologist or psychiatrist?

There's no minimum. Our child specialists work with young children through play and creative approaches, and with teenagers in ways that respect their growing independence. If you're worried, it's worth a conversation whatever your child's age.

How do I know if my teenager needs help or is just being a teenager?

Mood swings and wanting privacy are normal. Persistent withdrawal, big changes in sleep, eating or school performance, self-harm, or anxiety that stops them doing things are signs to act on. If in doubt, talk to us; a single conversation can clarify a lot.

Will I be told what my child says in sessions?

Younger children's parents are closely involved. With teenagers, therapists keep sessions confidential so trust can form, while always sharing anything that affects safety. Your child's therapist will explain the arrangement clearly at the start.

Do you assess children for ADHD, autism and learning difficulties?

Yes. Our child and adolescent psychiatrists and clinical psychologists carry out these assessments, including dyslexia and other learning difficulties, and we can advise on support at school.

Can you work with my child's school?

Yes, with your consent. We can provide reports and recommendations for schools and, where useful, liaise with teachers or learning-support staff.
