Complementary therapies

Mindfulness, art therapy, clinical nutrition and acupuncture that work alongside your care, the whole person, not just the symptom.

Complementary therapies at The Mind Faculty are practices that work alongside psychiatry and psychology, not instead of them: mindfulness and MBSR, hypnotherapy, art psychotherapy, acupuncture and clinical nutrition, offered by trained practitioners in Mont Kiara, Kuala Lumpur. They are used to help with stress, sleep, burnout, anxiety symptoms, grief and the physical side of mental health, as part of integrated care.

Mental health lives in the body as much as the mind, and some of what people need isn't a conversation. Our complementary practitioners are part of the faculty, not a separate wing, so acupuncture for sleep, mindfulness for an overactive stress response, or art psychotherapy for what's hard to say can be woven into your care by your psychiatrist or psychologist.

Each practitioner is trained and experienced in their discipline. We're honest about what the evidence supports: these approaches are most useful alongside evidence-based treatment, and where a condition needs psychiatric or psychological care, we'll say so.

What to expect

How complementary therapies works here

  1. Deciding what fits

Tell us what you're hoping for. If you're already seeing someone in the faculty, they may suggest a complementary therapy; if you're new, we'll help you decide whether to start here or with an assessment.

  2. A first session

Your practitioner will ask about your health, what's going on and what you'd like to change, and explain how their approach works before beginning.

  3. A course of sessions

Most complementary therapies work over a course rather than a single visit. Your practitioner will suggest a realistic number and review with you.

  4. Integrated with your care

With your consent, your complementary practitioner and your psychiatrist or therapist can coordinate, so everything is pulling in the same direction.

Questions people ask

Complementary therapies, answered

What is MBSR?

Mindfulness-based stress reduction is a structured, evidence-informed programme, usually eight weeks, that teaches mindfulness and gentle movement to reduce stress and its effects on sleep, mood and the body. It's practical, secular and widely used alongside conventional care.

Does acupuncture help with anxiety or insomnia?

Many people find acupuncture helpful for settling stress responses, improving sleep and easing anxiety symptoms, particularly alongside therapy or medication. Our acupuncturist is trained in Chinese medicine and works within the faculty, so it complements rather than replaces evidence-based treatment.

What is art psychotherapy and who is it for?

Art psychotherapy uses making images with a trained therapist to explore what's hard to put into words. You don't need any art skill. It's used with children, teenagers and adults, for trauma, grief, anxiety, depression and relationship difficulties.

Can I see a complementary therapist without seeing a psychiatrist or psychologist?

Yes. You're welcome to book directly. If your practitioner thinks you'd benefit from a psychiatric or psychological assessment as well, they'll say so and can arrange it within the faculty.

Is hypnotherapy safe?

Clinical hypnotherapy, delivered by a trained practitioner, is safe for most people and is used for anxiety, sleep, habits and chronic pain. It's a focused, relaxed state you remain in control of, not a loss of consciousness. Our practitioners will explain what to expect first.
