Psychological assessments are designed to provide additional information so that a full understanding of an individual’s current functioning and potential can be obtained.  Testing will be tailored to the individual client and the particular referral question.  Evaluations can be conducted to aid with questions regarding school performance, learning disabilities or emotional disturbances.

An assessment provides an objective basis for decision making regarding school based interventions, accommodations, or program placement.  From kindergarten readiness to college graduation, we highlight strengths and offer recommendations for overcoming obstacles.  We believe that everyone has areas of strength and accomplishment, and we are dedicated to helping young people overcome obstacles to realize their full potential.  We take pride in finding creative solutions for life’s challenges.

Educational evaluations are typically used to profile an individual’s development in the areas considered relevant to school success.  Such testing typically assesses cognitive skills, oral language skills, and perception.  Memory and attention can also be evaluated.  Finally, written language, mathematics, and oral expressive skills can be measured, allowing for a comparison of an individual’s capabilities with actual school achievement/functioning.

Other testing can be used to provide a profile of an individual’s development in the areas of motor skills, communication skills, and socialization skills.  Such information can be used to determine academic readiness or whether an individual may have a developmental delay, such as Autism or Asperger’s Disorder.  Results from these assessments can be used to develop strategies for optimizing strengths and addressing needs at school, work, and in the community. An accurate evaluation ensures that a broad understanding of an individual is obtained in order to develop programs designed to enhance development.  Specific school and home-based interventions can then be generated, utilizing school strengths which might not be evident within the classroom environment.  Evaluations can also provide education for parents about the nature of their child’s difficulty or disability and provide assistance in modifying parenting techniques to increase effectiveness in handling more challenging children.

Assessments for adults are usually quite specific and are often requested by an outside agency.  Adults may need an evaluation as a condition of employment or may need an assessment as part of an adoption application.  Evaluations may be necessary during divorce proceedings or when awarding custody of children.  Individuals may need an assessment in order to obtain accommodations in college or as part of a disability claim.  Others may have been referred to us by their therapist who wants additional information to aid in treatment planning.  We will consider why an individual may be seeking a psychological assessment and attempt to tailor our report to meet the specific needs of the client.

In group therapy, you learn that you are not alone in experiencing your problems, and you can experiment with trying to relate to people differently in a safe environment, with a psychologist present to assist as needed. Additionally, group therapy allows you to learn from the experiences of others with similar problems.  In group, not only do clients receive tremendous understanding, support, and encouragement from others facing similar issues, but they also gain different perspectives, ideas, and viewpoints on those issues.

Group therapy is an effective way to deepen your understanding of yourself and your relationships. It is a unique experience of joining together with others who share common goals, fears, and frustrations. In combination with the caring and supportive guidance of the therapist, group members can feel safe enough to explore their self-defeating responses to life’s losses, hurts, and pressures.

Group therapy offers you the opportunity to develop the strength to identify your needs, handle conflicts, and receive support. In a safe environment you can identify your stressors and how you have handled them in the past. Then you will be able to practice new skills, which can be applied to your personal life.

Is Group Therapy Right For Me?

Group therapy is suitable for a large variety of problems and difficulties.  The following is a list of issues commonly treated via group therapy.

  • Anger Management
  • Eating Disorders
  • Grief and Loss
  • Sexual Abuse
  • Substance Abuse
  • Thinking Errors

Athletes spend a tremendous amount of time practicing to get an edge on the competition.  No matter how good you are there are always areas in which you can enhance your performance.  Many athletes have the talent to be successful but fail to develop the mental aspect necessary to achieve optimal performance.  The mind-body connection is powerful and most athletes fatigue mentally before they fatigue physically.  This is often the result of focusing their preparation on the physical aspect while neglecting the mental component of their sport.  We often hear about how "Sports are 90% mental" but then spend a small percentage of time actually enhancing our mental capacities.  It is no surprise that more and more athletes are turning to psychologists to "take them to the next level."
Together we can develop a specific program tailored to your particular sport and your unique strengths and weaknesses.  Our services can help athletes manage anxiety, develop relaxation techniques, and enhance leadership skills.  Others have sought our services for help with a lack of consistency, to address difficulty maintaining focus, or to aid with recovery from injury.  Sport psychology can assist with goal setting, confidence, and visualizing yourself being successful, in an attempt to help you reach your full potential.

Athletes often attribute an exceptional performance to "being in the zone" but have no idea why they were "in the zone" that particular day.  Being in the zone is often characterized by a sense of relaxation, feeling confident, and having a singular focus.  During these instances their performance feels effortless, automatic, and fun.  Each of these factors can be enhanced by working with a psychologist in an attempt to enter the zone on a more consistent basis.

Areas of Focus Within Couples Therapy

  • Betrayal
  • Blended Families
  • Conflict Resolution
  • Commitment to the Relationship
  • Improving Communication
  • Financial Difficulties
  • Infertility
  • Infidelity
  • Intimacy
  • Parenting
  • Relationship Skill Building
  • Sexual Difficulties
  • Trust

Couples counseling focuses on the problems existing in the relationship between two people.  For example, if you are constantly arguing with your partner, you may also be anxious, angry or depressed.  Or, if you have difficulty controlling your temper, you will have more arguments with your partner.  Couples therapy will help you and your partner identify the conflict issues within your relationship, and will help you decide what changes are needed, in the relationship and in the behavior of each partner, for both of you to feel satisfied with the relationship.
Couples counseling involves learning how to communicate more effectively, and how to listen more closely. Couples must learn how to avoid competing with each other, and need to identify common life goals and how to share responsibilities within their relationship. Sometimes the process is very similar to individual therapy, sometimes it is more like mediation, and sometimes it is educational.  Couples counseling is tailored to the individual set of circumstances occurring with the relationship.

"The child is the father of man."

We all know that the child will be the leader of tomorrow so it is very important that we give them the best we can today. To ensure that they grow up to be healthy, happy and positive people. Sleep Talk for Children is the best gift that any parent can give to their child, a gift that can last a lifetime.

The Goulding SleepTalk™ process is easy to learn, takes parents only a few minutes daily at bedtime, and it can’t be “done wrong”. It’s absolutely safe, ethical and positive. SleepTalk™ is for people who are looking for a simple, non-intrusive self-esteem and behaviour change process for children that can help parents achieve what they want most - happy children and happy families.

The process is about developing a child's emotional resilience, the mind's firewall, which protects against negative suggestions; much like a firewall on a computer protects it from outside interference and damage.

After coming across so many cases, we still get amazed over the results of Sleep Talk. Parents who have underwent the program have mentioned that it could be just plain coincidence, or magic. But it is not. It is Sleep Talk.

  • The Goulding SleepTalk™ process empowers parents to help their children to achieve self-confidence, inner strength and to help with general and specific issues in their lives.
  • Children’s healthcare professionals have been using the The Goulding SleepTalk™ process for over 30 years.
  • It can help with issues such as separation anxiety, sibling rivalry, bed wetting, nail biting, social phobia, bad eating habits, night mares, sleep disturbances, behavior issues, ADHD, increasing school performance/ sports performance etc.
